You can use the Developer Kit for Linux to develop Java™ applets and applications. The Developer Kit package contains the following components:

  • Program Files

  •   Toolkit
      Runtime Environment
  • Library and Header Files
  • Demo Applets
Program Files

The Toolkit is a Java development environment with which you can:

Develop applets that conform to the 100% Pure Java™ specification
  Develop stand-alone Java applications

The Toolkit contains tools for developing Java applications and applets, including the following:

Java Compiler
Converts Java source code into Java byte codes that can later be run with the Java Interpreter.

Java Class Libraries
Define all the standard Java classes, allowing your Java applications to create and extend existing Java objects.

Java Applet Viewer
Provides a way to run an applet from the command prompt.

Java Interpreter
Runs programs written in the Java programming language.

A runtime environment is required to run Java applets and applications. The Runtime Environment for Linux is included in the Developer Kit for Linux and is also available as a separate package.

Library and Header Files

Use the Library and Header files to build native applications that interface with Java and make use of the Java Native Interface (JNI).

Demo Applets

With Java, there is no need to start from scratch on your programming efforts. You can install the Demo Applets and use them to develop applets and applications.
